Erectile dysfunction (ED) medications are used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. They are used in men as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes medication, lifestyle modifications, and medical treatment. Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) today announced that the world’s top-selling drug for erectile dysfunction was the blockbuster erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, which grossed $6.3 billion in revenue for the U. S. market and $1.7 billion in sales last year.
Viagra was introduced in 1998 as a treatment for erectile dysfunction, a condition in which men have trouble getting or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse.
Pfizer’s first generic version of Viagra, Pfizer’s original drug, has lost its patent protection in several countries, with countries like the U. that have filed for generic versions of the drug. The generic version is expected to be sold in the U. later this year.
“This is a significant milestone for Pfizer,” said Steve Bloomquist, Pfizer chairman and CEO. “We believe it will be a major milestone for the company and for patients worldwide, as well as for the pharmaceutical industry.”
This marks the first year Pfizer has been able to sell a generic version of Viagra, which it said will be the most lucrative drug for the company.
Pfizer’s sales of Viagra have been growing in the U. since its launch in 1998. In 2010, Pfizer reported a sales of $2.4 billion.
The loss of patent protection for Viagra is the largest drug loss in U. history, with sales of $7.3 billion in 2010.
“We recognize the need for strong sales growth in the coming years,” said Dr. Mark McCall, chairman and CEO of the American Men’s Health Initiative, a bi-monthly clinical trial to measure the efficacy and safety of Viagra, as well as a research project to examine the impact of Viagra’s use in men with erectile dysfunction.
McCall said Pfizer’s efforts to extend its monopoly in the erectile dysfunction drug market are in order.
“The continued development of Pfizer’s innovative research has led to a significant expansion of Pfizer’s product portfolio, including Viagra,” said McCall. “We believe the continued success of Pfizer’s innovative research will help drive continued growth in the erectile dysfunction market.”
Pfizer’s shares rose to $36.86 on Monday at $32.08, a 52-year high.
Pfizer shares fell to $36.85 on Tuesday.
In a statement, Pfizer said that the patent expiration of Viagra, which is the world’s top-selling erectile dysfunction drug, would allow generic Viagra to be sold by the first generic.
The new Viagra version will also be available in the U. through a partnership between the U. and international drugmaker Pfizer Inc.
Pfizer’s shares have traded lower at $26.66 on the New York Stock Exchange. The Nasdaq composite closed at $32.04, a low of $25.80.
The drugmaker had a revenue forecast of $5 billion to $6 billion in 2013, according to IMS data.
“Today’s announcement marks a significant milestone for Pfizer, and the company’s continued growth,” said John C. Wolfe, Chairman and CEO of The New York State Times. “Today’s move provides Pfizer with a new opportunity to bring its innovative research to patients and doctors.”
“Today’s decision not to extend the Pfizer patent to the U. represents an important step toward a healthier and more effective world for the pharmaceutical industry,” Wolfe added.
Pfizer announced its financial results on Tuesday, May 31.
